In 2021, Sound Idea Digital, in collaboration with Oliver Karstel Creative Agency, was commissioned to produce a series of corporate videos for the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Exporter of the Year Awards. The initiative recognises and celebrates African companies that have achieved success in exporting to the United States under AGOA’s trade framework. This project involved producing profile videos for all finalist companies in several award categories, managing live streaming for the ceremony, and delivering event graphics, photography, and a highlight reel. Following the success of the first year, the organisers commissioned Sound Idea Digital for a second year, expanding the production scope even further.
AGOA is a United States trade-preference law established to encourage economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa by providing duty-free access to the U.S. market for qualifying countries. The Exporter of the Year Awards, hosted by the International Trade Institute of Southern Africa (ITRISA) with support from USAID Southern Africa Trade & Investment Hub, honour businesses that demonstrate excellence and innovation in exporting goods to the U.S.
The awards ceremony highlights businesses that not only contribute to the economy but also serve as examples of how trade can support sustainable development. The event combines recognition with education by sharing real business stories that inspire others to expand into international markets. To present these stories authentically, the organisers required professional corporate videos to showcase each finalist.
The organisers needed a production partner capable of managing a project that was large in scale, logistically demanding, and time-sensitive. The brief required Sound Idea Digital to produce a corporate video for each finalist in the major award categories, coordinate directly with multiple companies located across South Africa, and complete all filming and post-production within two weeks.
The scope extended beyond video production. Sound Idea Digital was also responsible for live streaming the awards ceremony, producing the event graphics, photographing the 2021 event, and creating a highlight video for the 2022 ceremony. The organisers required a team experienced in large-scale coordination that could work independently, maintain quality under tight deadlines, and manage travel to several filming locations.
The central goal was to portray each finalist authentically while maintaining a professional and consistent visual standard across all videos. A documentary-style corporate video format was selected to allow each company’s story to be expressed in their own words.
Interviews formed the core of each video, supported by B-roll footage that illustrated the company’s environment, products, and people at work. A narrator’s voice served as a linking element between interviews, guiding the audience through the different stories and themes.
The interview questions were designed to draw out the essence of each company’s success. They explored each organisation’s journey, export experiences, market focus, and internal culture. This approach made it possible to show how these businesses not only achieved success but also created a positive impact for their employees and communities.
Given the complexity of the project, pre-production was extensive. The Sound Idea Digital team prepared a set of interview questions and shared them with the finalist companies in advance. This allowed the businesses to provide feedback and ensure that their unique stories were represented accurately.
The project required careful scheduling and coordination with all the companies to confirm filming dates and travel logistics. Since filming took place at multiple sites across South Africa, the team planned equipment transport, backup contingencies, and accommodation. Each company received guidance on preparing their locations for filming, such as tidying operational areas and ensuring relevant staff were available.
Two camera operators were deployed for each shoot, filming interviews and B-roll simultaneously to ensure a comprehensive visual record. Using two cameras allowed for variation in angles and framing, which added visual depth to the final edits.
Aerial footage was used selectively to show the scale of certain facilities. In one instance, the drone was flown inside a large factory, producing dynamic footage that glided over the operational floor. This use of aerial filming gave viewers a sense of the companies’ scope and technical sophistication.
Filming in active work environments required minimal disruption to the businesses’ daily operations. The team used portable, battery-powered lighting equipment to adapt to different settings without lengthy setup times. Each shoot was scheduled around the availability of company representatives, ensuring interviews were conducted efficiently and respectfully.
Because the timeline was short, post-production began immediately after filming started. Each day’s footage was sent to our editing team, accompanied by detailed briefings from the field crew. This allowed editors to begin assembling sequences while filming continued in other locations.
During editing, attention was paid to maintaining a consistent tone across all videos. Lower thirds and motion graphics were added to identify speakers and provide contextual information. A narrator tied together the interviews and visuals to create a cohesive story. Sound design, music selection, and colour grading were all refined to ensure that each video met the production standards expected at an international event.
The most demanding aspect of this project was the schedule. Filming and editing multiple corporate videos within two weeks required precise coordination between travelling crews and the editing department. To maintain efficiency, footage was transferred daily, and the editors worked on sequences while filming continued elsewhere.
Travelling with filming equipment across multiple provinces required planning for contingencies, including backups of batteries, data storage, and lighting. Each filming location presented unique lighting and sound challenges, which were resolved through portable, battery-powered lighting and adaptable sound equipment.
The participating companies were actively managing their own businesses, which meant interview times and site access often had to be adjusted. Our project manager ensured clear communication between Sound Idea Digital, the finalist companies, and the editing team, maintaining a consistent workflow and avoiding delays.
Across the two years, Sound Idea Digital produced:
The videos were delivered in formats suitable for event playback and online publication. The client later published them on YouTube, extending the reach of the event beyond attendees.
The videos were well received by all parties involved, including the organisers, the supporting agencies, and the participating companies. The feedback highlighted the efficiency, professionalism, and independence of the Sound Idea Digital team.
The client stated:
The success of the 2021 project led directly to the renewal of the partnership for 2022, where the scope expanded to include additional services and deliverables. The repeated collaboration reflected the client’s confidence in Sound Idea Digital’s capability to manage large-scale, multi-location productions with precision and care.
This project demonstrated the value of planning, collaboration, and adaptability. Working with numerous companies across the country within a tight timeframe required clear processes and communication. It reinforced the importance of pre-production planning, particularly in coordinating interviews and preparing filming environments.
It also underlined the value of building trust with both the commissioning organisation and the companies featured. Each finalist’s participation depended on a respectful and transparent process, where their time and input were treated with importance.
The project showcased Sound Idea Digital’s capacity to manage every stage of production, from concept development to delivery. It reflected our approach to corporate videos as a means to present authenticity, professionalism, and purpose rather than scripted promotion.
The project became more than a single production; it evolved into a continuing collaboration built on mutual trust and shared purpose. The organisers required a partner who could handle extensive coordination, complex logistics, and tight delivery schedules. By combining structured management with creative focus, Sound Idea Digital provided a dependable production framework that met those expectations while allowing the featured companies’ stories to take centre stage.
The continuation of the project into a second year reflected the value of consistency and the importance of long-term relationships in creative work. Each phase, from early planning to post-production, benefited from the lessons of the first year, leading to a refined process and expanded services.
Through this project, Sound Idea Digital reinforced its philosophy of producing corporate videos that reveal authenticity, care, and dedication in the organisations they represent. Every production is approached as a collaboration built on trust and communication, where technical precision supports genuine representation.
