One Health and Safety Induction Across Every Site
The Project
Westfalia Fruit required a modern health and safety induction that could be used consistently across its South African operations. These operations span avocado farms, packing facilities, oil production plants and offices, creating a varied training environment with agricultural, industrial, environmental and food safety considerations. The existing induction video no longer reflected the quality of the company’s facilities, brand or current operations. An updated production was therefore required to communicate critical safety information clearly while representing the environments encountered by employees, contractors and visitors. Sound Idea Digital developed a nine-minute, live-action induction video and managed the project from initial health and safety planning through to filming, post-production, multilingual localisation and final delivery. The result was a standardised training resource that could be used across multiple sites without losing the operational relevance of each environment.
Structuring a Comprehensive Induction
Developing a single induction for such a broad operational footprint required more than updating the previous script. The content needed to account for commercial orchards, production environments, heavy machinery, office spaces, natural hazards and environmental responsibilities while remaining clear and engaging throughout.
To guide this process, Sound Idea Digital supplied the client with a comprehensive health and safety checklist based on our experience producing health and safety induction videos across different industries. The checklist provided an organised framework covering common and site-specific training requirements, which the client then reviewed against its operations.
This collaborative process allowed the client’s operational knowledge to inform the content while giving our production team a clear foundation for the script. The selected information was then structured and refined into a coherent nine-minute narrative, ensuring that each topic connected naturally to the next and that the volume of information remained manageable for the viewer.
Capturing the Full Operating Environment
Filming took place over two days across multiple facilities. This multi-site approach was essential because no single location could accurately represent the range of environments covered by the induction.
The production captured avocado orchards, packing facilities, oil production plants, industrial processing equipment, forklifts, tractors and other agricultural machinery. Employees were filmed performing their actual work, including the safe use of equipment when climbing avocado trees. Real beekeepers were also filmed managing the pollination activities that form part of the agricultural environment.
Drone cinematography established the wider operational context by showing the scale of the orchards, facilities, dams, waterways and surrounding landscapes. These aerial views were combined with closer operational footage to connect the organisation’s agricultural setting with the specific behaviours required to work safely within it.
Using the company’s own employees, equipment and locations ensured that the production remained recognisable to its audience. Employees, contractors and visitors are not introduced to abstract examples; they see the people, machinery and environments they are likely to encounter on site.
Turning Site-Specific Risks into Practical Learning
The health and safety induction needed to address hazards that extend beyond those found in a conventional industrial facility. The operations include working orchards, natural water sources, wildlife, pollination activities and food production environments, each of which introduces its own safety requirements.
The video addresses encounters with bees and wasps, as well as wildlife such as hippos, warthogs and antelope. It also covers potential falls associated with tall trees, drowning risks near dams and waterways, the movement of agricultural machinery, hazardous chemical handling and the food safety practices required in processing and packing facilities.
These topics are presented alongside footage from the environments in which the risks occur. This connection between the instruction and the physical workplace helps viewers understand not only what is expected of them, but why each requirement matters within the operations.
Integrating the Brand into the Production
The client already had a collection of illustrated brand assets featuring fruit, orchards and agricultural scenes. Rather than developing a separate visual direction that could compete with this established identity, Sound Idea Digital incorporated the existing artwork into the opening sequence and title graphics.
The illustrations introduce the agricultural setting before transitioning into cinematic live-action footage of the company’s facilities and landscapes. This created continuity between the client’s established visual language and the new production while giving the induction a distinctive opening.
Motion graphics, colour grading, licensed music and branded title treatments were then used to create a consistent visual and audio experience across the full video. The design supported the training content without drawing attention away from the safety information being communicated.
Extending the Induction Across Five Languages
A standardised health and safety induction can only be effective if its audience can understand it. To make the training accessible to the client’s multilingual workforce and site visitors,we produced five complete versions in English, Portuguese for Mozambique, isiZulu, Sepedi and Tsonga.
Our team managed the complete localisation process. This included sourcing professional voice actor options for the client to review, coordinating the recordings and integrating the selected narration into each version. On-screen text and graphics were also updated for every language, with the timing of the visuals and edits adjusted where necessary to remain synchronised with the translated narration.
Localisation was therefore treated as a full production requirement rather than a voice-over replacement at the end of the project. Each audience received a complete version of the induction in their preferred language while the safety message, branding and visual quality remained consistent across all five outputs.
Managing the Project from Planning to Delivery
Sound Idea Digital’s involvement covered the complete production process: health and safety consultation, induction planning, script development, filming logistics, two days of multi-site production, drone cinematography, editing, colour grading, motion graphics and final mastering.
The scope also included integrating the client’s existing illustrations, sourcing licensed music, coordinating multilingual voice-over artists, managing translation and updating every graphic and on-screen title across the five language versions.
Managing these elements as one connected workflow helped maintain consistency between the approved safety content, the footage captured on location and the final localised deliverables. It also gave the company a single production partner responsible for the project from the initial content framework through to the delivery of every completed version.
The Result
The completed health and safety induction video provides the client with a consistent health and safety training resource for employees, contractors and visitors across its South African sites. It replaces the previous video with a production that reflects the organisation’s current operations, working environments and brand.
Location filming and five-language localisation allow the same core safety standard to be communicated across a varied operational footprint without treating every site as identical. Viewers see recognisable environments and practical risks, helping them understand how the safety requirements apply before entering or working on site.
A multi-site induction should communicate one safety standard while remaining relevant to the conditions at each location. Sound Idea Digital can structure, film and localise a solution around your facilities, operational risks and workforce.
