Creating a Health & Safety Induction Video for an Underground Coal Mine

Creating a Health & Safety Induction Video for an Underground Coal Mine

Sound Idea Digital was commissioned by Tumelo Coal Mine to produce a comprehensive Health & Safety Induction Video for its underground coal mining operations in South Africa.
Producing health and safety training content for the mining industry requires far more than conventional video production skills. It requires an understanding of the mining environment, strict adherence to safety procedures and the ability to operate safely and efficiently in challenging conditions.
With more than three decades of experience producing training, health and safety videos and industrial content, including extensive experience filming in underground and surface mines, Sound Idea Digital was well equipped to meet the challenges of this project.

Filming Deep Underground

Filming underground presented a unique set of technical and logistical challenges.

Lighting conditions were extremely limited, requiring our production team to bring additional lighting equipment, batteries and stands into the mine. Equipment also had to be carefully selected and configured to maintain a compact profile, allowing our crew to move efficiently through confined areas without interfering with mining operations.

Temperature and environmental changes also required careful management of equipment, including dealing with lens fogging and other conditions that can affect cameras and other production equipment.

Working in Confined Spaces

Underground mining environments often provide very little room for a conventional film crew. Our team had to work in extremely confined spaces while remaining mobile and ready to capture opportunities as they arose.

Planning was particularly important. Once underground, production could not simply interrupt normal mining activities to accommodate a film crew. Every sequence therefore had to be carefully planned in advance, while allowing sufficient flexibility to respond to changing conditions.

Our experience filming underground mines enabled the team to anticipate these challenges and work efficiently within the operational environment.

Dust, Noise and Vibration

Dust, debris, machinery noise and constant vibration created additional challenges for the production.

Underground conditions can change rapidly, making preparation critical. Our team planned for a range of potential obstacles before entering the mine, ensuring that equipment, crew and production requirements were ready for the conditions we encountered.

This preparation helped us make the most of every available filming opportunity while keeping disruption to mining operations to an absolute minimum.

Safety First: PPE and Mine Induction

Before filming could begin, every member of the production team underwent the required mine induction and safety procedures.

The crew was equipped with the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the underground environment, including:

Working safely was an integral part of the production process. The same discipline that applies to mine personnel had to apply to our production team.

Medical Preparation

Working underground also required our videographers to undergo comprehensive medical testing before entering the mine.

This preparation was an important part of ensuring that every crew member was physically suited to the demanding underground environment. Identifying potential medical risks before entering the mine helped minimise the possibility of incidents and ensured that the production team could operate safely throughout the shoot.

Experience Matters

The client entrusted Sound Idea Digital with this project because of our extensive experience producing health and safety training videos for the mining industry.

Our team understands that filming in a mine is fundamentally different from filming in a conventional production environment. Safety, preparation, mobility and an understanding of mining operations are essential to a successful production.

The Tumelo project was carefully planned in collaboration with the mine’s team, allowing us to capture the required footage while respecting operational requirements and maintaining the highest possible safety standards.

The result was a professional Health & Safety Induction Video designed to help communicate essential safety information clearly and effectively to personnel working within the coal mine environment.
