From PowerPoint to Rapid 2D Animation: A Better Safety Induction
The Project
Egoli Gas needed to modernise the way it delivered health and safety inductions across its operational sites. The existing process relied on a trainer presenting a PowerPoint presentation, which required a staff member to facilitate every session and made the quality, pacing and consistency of the induction dependent on the individual presenter. Sound Idea Digital developed a fully branded, 13-minute rapid 2D animated induction video for employees, contractors and visitors. Completed within two weeks of script approval, the video now forms part of the client’s wider induction programme and is used daily before personnel enter any of its operational sites.
Designing for Consistent Delivery Across Multiple Sites
The induction needed to communicate a substantial amount of safety information clearly while remaining relevant across the clients different facilities. Producing a live-action video at one location could have made the content feel specific to a single site, particularly as buildings, equipment and working environments varied across locations.
Animation removed this limitation. Hazards, procedures and expected behaviours could be represented without tying the induction to a particular facility, creating a standardised resource that could be used throughout the organisation. It also gave the team greater control over how each safety concept was presented, allowing operational information to be simplified without removing essential detail.
The resulting rapid 2D animation video provides every learner with the same approved information, in the same sequence and at the same level of detail. This reduces variation between induction sessions while removing the need for a trainer to repeat the full presentation each time new personnel arrive.
Balancing Production Speed, Cost and Visual Quality
This blended approach maintained visual consistency while keeping the project within its production schedule and budget. Sound Idea Digital used library-based rapid 2D animation to streamline production, avoiding the time and cost of creating every character, environment and movement from scratch.
To ensure the induction remained specific to the client, the existing assets were supplemented with custom motion graphics, safety illustrations, information callouts and transitions. Together, these elements created a consistent, branded visual system.
This approach enabled the complete 13-minute induction to be produced within two weeks of script approval.
Developing the Content Collaboratively
The client prepared the initial script and supplied visual guidance for many of the sections. Sound Idea Digital worked with the client to review and refine this material before animation began, advising on structure, pacing and the relationship between the narration and visuals.
Because the script covered numerous operational requirements, the content had to be structured at a pace that learners could follow without making the programme unnecessarily long. Once approved, it was translated into a visual storyboard showing how each concept would be demonstrated or reinforced on screen. This gave the client and production team a shared reference before animation commenced.
Translating Safety Requirements into Visual Learning
The induction addresses risk assessments, permits to work, personal protective equipment, emergency procedures, environmental management and individual employee responsibilities. These subjects contain detailed information that can be difficult to absorb when communicated through narration or presentation slides alone.
Each topic was therefore broken into focused visual sequences using animated scenarios, character actions, simplified iconography, infographics, on-screen text and custom callouts. Relevant visuals reinforced each critical voice-over message, allowing learners to see hazards, required behaviours and procedural steps as they were introduced.
This approach was particularly important for employees, contractors and visitors with varying levels of familiarity with the site and its operations. The combination of narration and visual reinforcement made the information more accessible while helping maintain attention throughout the whole video.
Integrating the Brand into the Induction
The corporate identity was applied to the full visual experience rather than being limited to opening titles and logos. The brand’s colour palette was applied across the characters’ overalls, personal protective equipment, iconography, information callouts, motion graphics, section transitions and safety illustrations.
Consistent branding connected the different animation techniques and helped the rapid and bespoke elements function as one visual system. It also positioned the induction as a training resource developed specifically for its operational environment, rather than a generic safety video adapted with a logo.
Licensed background music and a professionally produced voice-over supported the delivery of the content. The music was balanced against the narration, while final editing, compositing and mastering ensured consistent audio and visual quality throughout.
From Initial Script to Final Delivery
Sound Idea Digital managed the full production process following receipt of the client’s initial content. The scope included script review and refinement, pacing and duration guidance, visual storyboarding, rapid 2D animation, bespoke motion graphics, brand application, licensed music, professional voice-over production, editing, compositing and final mastering.
Bringing these disciplines together within one production workflow allowed creative and technical decisions to be coordinated throughout the project. Script changes could be considered in relation to timing, visual complexity and voice-over delivery, while the animation and motion graphics were developed according to the same approved content and brand direction.
The Result
The organisation now has a standardised health and safety induction that can be delivered consistently across multiple operational sites. The video is used daily to prepare visitors, contractors and new employees before they enter the site, replacing a repetitive trainer-led presentation with a reusable animated resource.
The induction reduces facilitator dependency, supports faster onboarding and gives the organisation greater control over how critical safety information is communicated. Because the content is not tied to one physical location, the same resource can be deployed across the organisation without losing relevance.
By combining rapid 2D animation with bespoke motion graphics, Sound Idea Digital delivered a cost-conscious solution within a limited production schedule while retaining the clients branding, clarity and visual cohesion required for a long-term training resource.
The right combination of rapid animation and custom motion graphics can make complex safety information clearer without requiring the cost or timeline of a fully bespoke production.
