Making Groundwater Visible Across Southern Africa
For the Southern African Development Community Groundwater Management Institute (SADC-GMI), Sound Idea Digital produced three documentary-style videos about groundwater initiatives in Botswana, Eswatini and Malawi. This groundwater video production connects regional water management with the people and places at the heart of the work.
The storytelling challenge
Groundwater is essential, but much of the work involved in managing it happens out of sight. The challenge for this groundwater video production was to make that work tangible by connecting technical and institutional perspectives with the communities affected by water access.
Each film brings a distinct setting and perspective to the series. In Botswana, a presentation on the HGA Import Module is paired with an interview featuring Neil Fitt of the Kalahari Conservation Society. In Eswatini, interviews at and around St Paul’s Primary School place the story alongside the school’s water infrastructure. In Malawi, an on-location interview brings viewers into a community setting.
A regional story with local perspectives
Rather than flattening the three locations into one account, the films preserve the character of each country’s contribution. That approach gives the groundwater video production a consistent regional thread while allowing each interview and location to shape its own story.
The interviews provide personal perspectives, while the surrounding footage gives viewers a sense of where the work is taking place. Together, these elements show the breadth of groundwater initiatives across the region, from technical knowledge and data management to local institutions and the everyday importance of reliable water access. In Eswatini, the wider project included solar-powered systems at monitoring stations and work benefiting schools and clinics.
The finished work
The result is a three-part documentary series that makes a complex subject more accessible without losing its technical and regional context. Through interviews, location footage and project details, this groundwater video production gives audiences a clearer view of the work and the people connected to it.
The series also gives the three country stories a shared visual platform, helping each stand on its own while contributing to a wider conversation about water management. As a piece of groundwater video production, it brings regional expertise and local perspectives together in a format audiences can watch, share and learn from.
